This operation is done when there is a tear to the anal sphincter muscle resulting in poor control of bowel motions. A cut is made in front of the anus (between the anus and the vagina) and the sphincter muscles double-breasted. Often the pelvic floor muscles are also reinforced to give more muscle bulk. The wound is often not fully closed to allow the wound to drain. It is not uncommon for the wound to get a degree of infection following this operation which may require dressings.
