Right Hemicolectomy / Ileocolic resection

The right side of the large bowel (illustration right) is removed and the small bowel joined to the large bowel by staples or sutures (stitches). This can be done by either laparoscopic (keyhole) or open approaches. As with
any bowel surgery with a join there is a small chance of leakage from the join after the procedure which is in the order of 3%.

For some patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease a single site laparoscopic approach can be done with a single small scar within the umbilicus.
